Prevention Tips

As with every condition, it is always better to prevent hemorrhoids than treat them when they appear. Because of that, prevention is one of the best home remedies for hemorrhoids. Here is what you can do to prevent hemorrhoids from appearing altogether.

  • Exercise and lose weight if you are overweight. Obesity and an inactive lifestyle, especially for those sitting in front of a computer for most of their working day is the road to hemorrhoids. Your organs will start working at lower levels, and your overall health declines, creating a breeding ground for hemorrhoids

  • Increase your fibre intake by consuming more fruits and vegetables. Fibre is essential for better bowel movement, and fruits and veggies are your best source of fibre. Preventing constipation, fibre also improves the work of your colon, all of which prevents hemorrhoids. Aside from fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, beans are also great sources of fibre

  • Don’t forget about probiotics. You need good bacteria to balance your gut, prevent constipation and promote better health. Cheese, yogurt, fermented drinks like kombucha, all of these are great sources of probiotics

  • Make sure to keep your anal area clean by taking daily baths or showers and cleansing the skin around your anus. Use warm water to clean the anal area. You do not need to use soap, as soaps might aggravate the problem

  • Do not use alcohol or perfumed based wipes as they worsen the condition

  • Don’t use dry toilet paper. Moisture is important, so you can opt for wet toilet paper without perfume or alcohol or moist towelettes

  • Laxatives and stool softeners can help if you are having problems going to the bathroom. Talk to your physician for a recommendation of some laxatives, or you can opt for natural laxatives such as leafy greens, chia seeds, flaxseeds, coconut water and high fibre fruits

  • Following good bathroom habits is also important. Do not force something to happen. If you cannot go, wait and go later. Do not spend more than two minutes on the throne. Practising a routine of going to the bathroom every day at the same time helps

  • When it comes to underwear, wear loose cotton underwear that helps the area aired and doesn’t allow moisture buildup.
