Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a natural substance that is crystalline but often appears as a fine powder. This alkaline substance has antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also a powerful medical tool effective at combating everything from colds to oral problems to skin issues.
Exfoliation is an important part of skincare that is extremely effective in reducing the breakout of acne. Uses of baking soda are numerous and it is a powerful natural remedy to treat acne and pimples. It is inexpensive and easily available and should be included in scrubs and facial masks for improving skin health.
Take 4 teaspoons of baking soda in a cup and add some water to it. Mix to form a thick, smooth paste and apply it to the acne and pimples and let it soak for 15 to 20 minutes or till the paste has dried off completely. Rinse with water, dry your face with a towel and apply an oil-free moisturizer to the face. Repeat this remedy 2 times a week till acne and pimples disappear.
Acne scar mask
People who face difficulties fading their ugly acne scars must try baking soda because it’s cheaper and more effective than other home remedies. It’s worked like magic on acne scars I insist you all use baking soda on your scars once as it sheds your old skin and helps to get a new one.
Take one or 2 tablespoons of baking soda and add olive oil to it. Apply using your hands or cotton ball and massage in a circular motion. Let it stay for 30 minutes. After that wash your face with warm water. Use it several times a week to get better results.
Relieves sunburn and sunburn blisters
During the summer, keep a box of baking soda handy. Due to its alkaline nature, baking soda has a soothing effect on sunburned skin, which helps relieve the itching and burning sensations. It also has mild antiseptic and drying properties that help dry out sunburn blisters quickly.
Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a cup of cold water. Soak a clean washcloth in this solution, wring out the excess water and apply it as a cool compress on the affected area for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat 2 or 3 times a day until you get relief.
Alternatively, add ½ cup of baking soda to a bathtub filled with water. Stir well and soak yourself in this water for 10 to 15 minutes. After getting out of the bath, pat dry or allow your body to air dry. Do this once daily for a few days.
Mix baking soda with your favourite shampoo to get a wonderful purifying shampoo that will cleanse your hair from the residue that styling products leave behind. Mix one tablespoon of soda with one tablespoon of your favourite shampoo and wash your hair with this mix. After rinsing thoroughly, you will notice that your hair will become squeaky clean and more easily manageable. It’s not an everyday shampoo though. It’s great to wash your hair with this baking soda shampoo once or twice a month. For similar results you can also wash your hair with just baking soda plus water, this is one of the most popular uses of baking soda.
Treats stained or yellow nails
Stained nails can be unsightly, but baking soda can whiten your nails so you do not have to hide them in your pockets or gloves. Its bleaching and exfoliating properties help remove stains.
Put 1/2 cup of water, 1 teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon of baking soda in a small bowl. Stir well, until the baking soda dissolves. Dip your nails into the solution for 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat once every two weeks.
